Picking A Cardoor Lock

Picking a Cardoor Lock Requires Having the Right Tool

It has happened to every driver more times than they care to remember - you lock your keys in the car and then have to wait for a locksmith to come let you in. However, there is an easy solution to get back into your car once you learn how to pick the lock. You do have to be careful when picking a lock, though, so you do not cause any excessive damage to the vehicle.

Step 1
Buy a tool to use as a lock pick at any hardware or home improvement store. These can be purchased under the name of Slim Jim, though any long flat piece of metal will work. If you are locked out and do not have something like this with you, ask someone in the vicinity if they will let you borrow one.

Step 2
Put the Slim Jim into the spot where the car window and the weather stripping intersect. Be sure that you do this carefully so that you do not hurt the weather stripping in any way.

Step 3
Move the Slim Jim around until you feel a lever between the weather stripping and the window. By pulling or pushing this lever, you will cause the car door to unlock.

Step 4
Go slowly and carefully as you try to find the lever to push or pull. Every car has a different spot for the lever, even cars of the same model but from different years will have the lever in different spots. It will often be easy to find this lever on older cars, while newer cars may take a little while. Just be sure it is done carefully.

Step 5
Take the Slim Jim out of the window by slowly unhooking it and sliding it out of its place. Do this slowly so as not to cause any damage to the window or internal parts of the car.

Tips
Do not try this method of unlocking your car if you are not sure that it will work on your car. Many newer cars have safeguards against this kind of unlocking, so your best option, in this case, might be to use your cell phone to call a locksmith or a friend to take you to get your set of spare keys. If you have a satellite system such as OnStar, this would be a good time to use that feature, as well.
